Description¶
The authors propose, based on their findings, a possible new "tiered" model for interventions such as First Step in which "broad-based groups of children with a variety of behavioral or developmental problems are not only provided with a generic tier-two intervention, but 'non-responders' are then provided with additional screening" designed to select children who might benefit from tier-two interventions augmented with components of specific evidence-based disorder interventions. The model leverages the finding that a broad-based intervention benefited children at risk of ASD without targeting the diagnosis.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A validated broad-based tier-two intervention deliverable before formal diagnosis
- Additional screening administered to non-responders to select augmented interventions
Constraints¶
- The article offers this as a possible model suggested by the evidence, not one tested in this study
Target Learners¶
- preschool children with challenging behavior, including those at risk for ASD
Learning Goals¶
- prosocial academic behaviors
- school success skills
- reduction of ASD-related symptoms and impairment
Claims¶
- First Step Teacher Symptom Improvements Asd Risk [+M]
- First Step Parent Reported Outcomes Asd Risk [+M]
