Description¶
The article applies translational medicine (TM), an interdisciplinary "bench to bedside" approach, as the guiding concept for connecting basic medical science with clinical situations in skills training. It argues TM "acts as a bridge for the bi-directional conversion between basic research and clinical practice", and uses this idea to justify tightly alternating simulation scenarios with real clinical practice rather than teaching theory, simulation and bedside work in isolation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A medical simulation center or training platform and access to a teaching hospital with real cases
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- undergraduate medical students in diagnostics and internal medicine
Learning Goals¶
- clinical basic skills
- clinical thinking
- doctor-patient communication
Claims¶
- Students in the integrated mode reported higher satisfaction and better perceived mastery of clinical basic skills than traditionally taught students [+W]
- Alternating simulation scenarios with bedside teaching lets students practice less harmful examinations on real patients and invasive or rejected items on simulators, ensuring patient safety [+W]
- Integrated simulation-and-clinical-practice teaching produced no statistically significant difference in clinical basic skills or theory exam scores compared with traditional teaching [-W]
- The closer training content is to authentic clinical scenarios, the smoother its translation into practice [+W]
