Description¶
An instructional element in which a researcher-created Twitter learning community is used for weekly discussion of the course content taught in person, with the teacher guiding students online by answering questions. The article describes the design as "continuity between in-class learning and a learning community created by the researcher on Twitter to discuss on a weekly basis the learning resource taught in person." The abstract describes the split as 75% in-class and 25% Twitter activities, while the tables describe it as 70% in person plus 30% Twitter.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Rules for using the Twitter learning community were explained at the outset (e.g., no publications unrelated to the course, connecting at the appropriate time, being respectful)
Constraints¶
- The 140-character message limit requires brevity; users have no certainty that all their tweets are seen at the same time
Target Learners¶
- female master's students in educational technology at Taibah University
Learning Goals¶
- discussing course content
- sharing knowledge collaboratively
- social interaction around course topics
