Two-hour classroom AI literacy workshop combining LLM concepts with agency-preserving regulation practice

Description

A two-hour, classroom-feasible workshop with a conceptual component on "how LLMs generate text, why they can produce incomplete or incorrect answers" and a practical component that "did not rehearse the later experimental science tasks". Students discussed common LLM output problems, then in small groups predicted whether prompts would elicit satisfactory responses, queried an LLM, evaluated answers, and revised prompts as needed. The slide deck and facilitation script are released in an OSF repository.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A classroom setting with LLM chatbot access for the practical prompting activities

Constraints

  • The workshop did not rehearse the experimental science tasks, so effects tested transfer of a general regulatory stance
  • Materials are currently available in French

Target Learners

  • middle-school students in grades 8–9 (ages 13–15)

Learning Goals

  • applied regulation of LLM interaction: prompting, response evaluation, and follow-up questioning during science problem solving
