Description¶
A two-hour face-to-face workshop in the ICT course of the Bachelor's Degree in Primary Education, designed as a feasible microintervention within regular teacher education timetables. It featured three hands-on stations with teacher guidance: programming with Scratch (sequences, loops, conditionals, debugging), interaction with Makey Makey boards (conductivity and physical-digital interaction), and controlling Maqueen robots with micro:bit (sensor-based control including a line-following challenge). An introductory machine-learning component provided "an initial conceptual approximation to machine learning, rather than to develop operational ML skills," explaining how data classify patterns and how models are trained from examples. A total of 105 students participated in four groups of 25–30.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teacher guidance to introduce the tools and the logic underlying each challenge; rotating stations with specific objectives and tasks aligned with different aspects of computational thinking
Constraints¶
- The machine-learning component did not involve technical development or training of machine learning models; the study design does not isolate whether differences are attributable to the intervention content or to any structured active-learning experience
Target Learners¶
- first-year pre-service Primary Education teachers
Learning Goals¶
- computational thinking concepts (sequencing, loops, conditionals, abstraction, debugging)
- algorithmic logic and parallelism
- perseverance in iterative problem solving
Claims¶
- Microintervention Posttest Differences Three Dimensions [+M]
- Item Level Familiarity Gaps Ml Blocks Game Engines [~M]
