Description

A dataset of school grades for 32 pupils, 18 girls and 14 boys, who entered Urbana High School in the fall of 1908 and graduated in the spring of 1912, studied the same subjects under the same instructors, and were selected after examining "the records of the pupils for the past six years." The authors tabulated ranks and grades in algebra, civics, American history, geometry, Latin and four years of English, dividing pupils into four equal groups of eight as the unit of comparison.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Pupils must have undergone the same treatment and lived under the same conditions, including identical instructors, subjects, and years of schooling, to give what the authors call a constant basis for trustworthy results.

Constraints

  • The group is a single small cohort from one school; the authors repeatedly qualify conclusions with 'so far as this group is concerned' and 'with regard to the group studied.'

Target Learners

  • secondary school pupils

Learning Goals

  • academic achievement across school subjects
