VCU University College model: cohort-based first-year core curriculum with centralized support and proactive advising¶

Description¶
Virginia Commonwealth University's University College, launched in 2006, is built around "a cohesive core curriculum with a limited set of course options and small class sizes," taught by dedicated cross-disciplinary faculty, with a full-year cohort class. It pairs this with proactive advising — required advisor meetings twice a semester, faculty attendance reporting, and outreach at the first sign of trouble — plus learning, writing, and supplemental instruction centers. After implementation, DFW rates in core courses decreased significantly and retention rose.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Significant investment and commitment at the highest levels of the institution
- Dedicated faculty hired to work across disciplines
- Professionally trained advisors tracking student data
Constraints¶
- The article attributes the model's success to VCU's context; it reports institutional self-attributions rather than a controlled evaluation
Target Learners¶
- First-year undergraduates, including undeclared majors at risk of dropping out
Learning Goals¶
- First-year course success, retention, and on-time graduation
Claims¶
Patterns Used¶
- Evidence-based college completion practices: proactive advising with required advisor meetings, attendance reporting and early outreach
