Verification-centered Johnstone-3P architecture for GenAI in university chemistry education¶

Description¶
The review proposes an explanatory architecture in which Johnstone's chemistry triplet (macroscopic, submicroscopic, symbolic domains, with representational translation as a cross-domain process rather than a fourth level) supplies a chemistry-specific epistemic test, and Biggs' Presage-Process-Product model supplies the pedagogical conditions. As the review states, "Johnstone’s triplet identifies the disciplinary location of this risk, while Biggs’ 3P model shows that outcomes depend on readiness, task design, policy, and assessment." Presage conditions shape learners' capacity to verify; process-level prompting, critique, and revision operate across the three domains; product outcomes must be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Learners must possess sufficient prior chemistry knowledge and representational competence to verify outputs, since students cannot verify what they do not understand
Constraints¶
- The review treats representational translation as a cross-domain reasoning process, not a fourth level of the triplet
- The framework is developed for university chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and chemistry teacher education contexts
Target Learners¶
- University chemistry students
- Preservice and in-service chemistry teachers
- Chemical engineering students
Learning Goals¶
- Coordinating macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic reasoning
- Chemical accuracy and representational fluency
- Professional judgment and laboratory responsibility
