Four fictitious interview videos and adapted French critical thinking disposition scales for adolescents

Description

The study material comprises four 45–55-second fictitious interview videos on meat consumption reduction, in which the interviewee's position and expertise (expert vs layperson) varied, with expertise signaled by a banner and interview location. Students rated source and information trustworthiness on nine-point scales, then completed adapted French questionnaires measuring self-efficacy, epistemic justification, intellectual humility, and reasoning style. As the authors note, "The four videos had been produced for an earlier research project on students' evaluation of conflicting videos".

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Item comprehension was checked with a pretest among 11-12 year-old students (N = 14) and teacher review, since scales were translated and adapted for a young audience.

Constraints

  • The authors state their work "does not allow us to claim French validations of the questionnaires and their adaptation to another population"; the video material was purpose-built for research and may be at odds with videos adolescents actually encounter online.

Target Learners

  • Middle school students aged 11–16
  • High school students aged 15–19

Learning Goals

  • Critical evaluation of sources and information in online videos
