Virtual classroom delivery of the SBS scheme for external students¶

Description¶
The virtual classroom (VC) is a tool for delivering live synchronous e-learning that mimics the face-to-face classroom and delivers content live over the Internet to geographically dispersed students, making it suited to external HB1 students. Staff trained Buddies and Leaders before commencing, sessions were recorded so external students could access them at their own time and pace, and content coverage and session numbers were identical for internal and external groups.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Key staff conduct VC training sessions for Buddies and Buddy Leaders before commencing
- The course coordinator sets up the classroom weekly, converting materials to suitable formats such as PDFs and multiple-choice polls
Constraints¶
- Because internal and external students' results were combined, the article states it is difficult to comment on what the data say specifically about the virtual classroom
Target Learners¶
- external (off-campus) first-year Nursing students studying Human Body 1
Learning Goals¶
- synchronous peer support and real-time interaction for geographically dispersed students
- reduced anxieties of isolation and disconnectedness
