Description

The study assessed cardiorespiratory fitness with an incremental treadmill test to volitional exhaustion, using a metabolic system with a 4.2-L mixing chamber. Oxygen uptake was recorded at 30-s intervals, and VO2max was defined when two of three criteria were satisfied: attaining a VO2-plateau, attaining a HR >90% of age-predicted maximum, and attaining a respiratory exchange ratio >1.1. The average of the two highest consecutive 30-s VO2 values was recorded as individual VO2max.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • 10-min warm-up with gradient of 1.7% on a motorized treadmill
  • Incremental protocol with treadmill-gradient of 5.3% and start velocity of 8 km/h, speed increased 1 km/h each minute until volitional exhaustion
  • Full system calibration before testing each group and regular volume calibration with a 3 L syringe

Constraints

  • Participants were excluded if diagnosed with heart disease, asthma or any disease potentially affecting the cardiorespiratory system
  • Participants were asked not to engage in strenuous physical exercise the day before the physical test

Target Learners

  • healthy male high-school students

Learning Goals

  • cardiorespiratory fitness measurement
