Description

Vocabulary Self-Selection (Haggard) is an interactive-learning instructional strategy in which students choose the words they want to learn from their own reading, guess meanings from context in collaborative groups, negotiate definitions with the teacher, and record words on index cards. The article describes it as "based on the self-selection of words during reading", using student-generated rather than preselected word lists, and states it "makes students independent over time". In the study it was implemented in groups of four over 24 sessions with a board vocabulary graph and card games.
