Description

This instructional pattern sequences learning as worksheets, each describing a simulated problem to solve in Alice, with concepts introduced only when needed and teacher support progressively withdrawn. "Each worksheet had a few concepts which would only be approached in the moment in which they would be necessary to the resolution of the problem." After the first problems, "the students solved new problems in which they would have to use the previous concepts but relying on less support by the teacher", culminating in a challenge solved without any help. Students demonstrating autonomy were invited to explore other approaches, while others continued with heavy teacher support until prepared for the next problems.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • The same teacher tutors the sequence and provides individualized cognitive and corrective feedback during worksheet resolution

Constraints

Target Learners

  • secondary vocational education students without prior programming experience

Learning Goals

  • initial programming concepts such as variables, selection and repetition structures, sub-programming, and operations
