Description¶
Anchored instruction situates learning around a shared, meaningful scenario or "anchor" that gives learners a concrete context for inquiry, analysis, and problem solving.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A rich anchor such as a story, case, video, event, or scenario
- Tasks that require learners to revisit the anchor from multiple angles
- Enough information in the anchor to support inquiry without fully resolving the problem
Constraints¶
- Weak or artificial anchors can feel decorative rather than instructionally central
- If the anchor carries too much irrelevant detail, it can distract from the intended concept
- Learners may need scaffolds to extract salient details from a complex anchor
Target Learners¶
- Learners developing applied reasoning
- Learners who benefit from contextualized rather than decontextualized tasks
- Groups working on collaborative interpretation and decision making
Target Learning Goals¶
- Connecting concepts to realistic situations
- Supporting transfer and problem framing
- Encouraging inquiry, evidence use, and discussion
Affordances¶
- Makes learning goals feel purposeful and coherent
- Supports repeated return to a common reference point
- Creates a natural bridge between explanation and application
Claims¶
- The closer training content is to authentic clinical scenarios, the smoother its translation into practice [+M]
- Abrupt location or character changes mid-scenario co-occur with the lowest story-content coherence ratings [~W]

Patterns That Use This Element¶
Examples¶
- A video case anchors a unit on environmental decision making
- A workplace incident report anchors a safety-training investigation
- A civic planning scenario anchors data analysis, argumentation, and presentation
