Educational Belief Scale (40 items, five philosophy sub-dimensions)¶
Element · All elements
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
A self-report instrument the article uses to measure teachers' educational philosophy beliefs: "there are 40 items composed of five sub-dimensions that are scored as five-point Likert-type". Higher sub-dimension scores indicate that a teacher believes and adopts that philosophy more. In this survey of 789 physical education teachers, Cronbach alpha was .75-.87 in the sub-dimensions and .89 in total; the five-factor structure had been verified with confirmatory factor analysis.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Items are scored from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly Agree) and interpreted per sub-dimension.
- Because the data did not show a normal distribution, the article compared groups with non-parametric Mann-Whitney U and Kruskall-Wallis H tests.
Constraints¶
Target Learners¶
- In-service teachers; in this article, physical education and sports teachers in official secondary and high schools
Target Learning Goals¶
- Measuring how far teachers adopt perennialism, essentialism, progressivism, existentialist education and reconstructivism
