Description¶
Learners work in small groups to create a dance or movement sequence that represents a concept they have been studying (e.g., resonance, energy transfer). The task unfolds in cycles: collaborative brainstorming and initial choreography, a first sharing with performer reflection on what the dance represents (and misrepresents or omits), structured peer feedback, revision, and a final sharing. The task treats movement as a legitimate epistemic tool: learners must translate an abstract concept into kinetic and narrative form, make representational choices, and defend those choices through explanation.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A concept abstract or dynamic enough to be usefully represented through movement/metaphor (e.g., a process, a relationship, a force)
- Structured peer feedback focused on noticing what works, asking clarifying questions, and suggesting refinements — not just evaluation
- Multiple iteration cycles, not a single one-shot performance
Constraints¶
- Evidence for this technique comes from a single qualitative study in informal, arts-integrated community settings — Multimodal, culturally grounded assessment supports engagement and agency [~W]
Target Learners¶
- Learners in settings where movement, music, and creative expression are already valued cultural resources
Target Learning Goals¶
- Demonstrating and refining conceptual understanding through representational, non-verbal means
- Practicing justification: explaining why a given choreographic choice represents the concept accurately
Affordances¶
Claims¶
Related Elements¶
- Listening Palette — a lighter-weight multimodal reflection task from the same study, often used earlier in a unit
Examples¶
- Youth choreographed a dance representing resonance as "small effort creating large impact," framing the physics concept through a social scenario of interpersonal influence, then revised it after peer feedback.
