Three-set coding scheme (group, grade level, subject area) with column-aligned codes and group indexes¶
Design Method · All design methods
Evidence · no claims cited
Description¶
Each resource entry carries three sets of codes on its last line: group codes (e.g., AA Asian American, BA Black American, MF Minority Female, H Handicapped), grade-level codes (E elementary, J junior high, H high school), and subject-area codes (R reading, SS social studies, O other). As the guide notes, "it should be noted that each code always appears in'the same coluenn as you go down the page," so users interested in a particular group, grade, or subject can scan the corresponding column. Consecutively numbered items are retrievable through group indexes at the end of each section and an alphabetical title index at the end of the book.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Item numbers must be used as entries in the group indexes and title index; users locate items by finding the page with the appropriate numerical range
Constraints¶
- Section 13, Organizations, is the only section without group, grade level, and subject area codes and has no corresponding group index
Target Learners¶
- Guide users seeking materials for specific minority groups, grade levels, or subject areas
Target Goals¶
- Efficient retrieval of fairness-related educational resources matched to a target group, grade level, and subject
