Description¶
The paper models a strategy of conceptual clarification: rather than abandoning a fertile but empirically elusive construct, link it to a concept with greater behavioral vulnerability. The author proposes "employing Goffman's role distance concept for that of Halpin and Croft's authenticity" because the "behavioral vulnerabilities of role distance appear to be appreciably greater than do those of the authenticity concept," thereby making empirical inroads on the more ambiguous concept by treating role distance as one of its dimensions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Identification of a candidate concept with demonstrably greater behavioral vulnerability, and documented similarity of prose definitions between the two concepts
Constraints¶
- The author warns of potential pitfalls in equating concepts derived from distinctive nomological networks, and notes the reductionist approach may displease some exponents of the authenticity concept
Target Learners¶
- Educational researchers and organizational theorists studying school climates
Target Learning Objectives¶
- Operationalizing theoretical constructs for empirical organizational research
