Description¶
The principle of multimediatizing "consists in the direct expression of a didactized content into a multimedia form". The author argues that courseware design should build on what the machine can do best — real-time sound processing and automatic segmenting — rather than on exercises, and that teachers must rethink pedagogical practice rather than merely digitize discretely edited media. With LAVAC, no storyboard is needed because for language teaching the privileged medium is SOUND: automatic segmenting produces numbered sequences to which text, images and exercises are attached by a simple mouse click.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- The teacher writes the transcript and analyzes lexical and syntactic difficulties for his or her specific students; detailed design is achieved through doing.
Constraints¶
- A complete rethinking of pedagogical practices has to be undertaken; some teachers are ready for it, some are not, and few training courses integrate epistemological thinking on the changes involved in didactic practices.
Target Learners¶
- Non-programming language teachers producing their own courseware
Target Learning Objectives¶
- Design of multimedia language-learning courseware suited to learners' didactic needs
Claims¶
- Students are more attentive to the teacher's model track when they hear their own recording first [+W]
- Students pause the video after a few sequences to consult a segment menu and judge workload by segment count [+W]
