Description

A Krieglstein et al. self-report questionnaire that measures learners' perceived intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load with five Likert-type items for each construct.

Components

  • A 15-item theory-based questionnaire measuring intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load separately: The instrument measures the three cognitive load types separately with multiple items on a 9-point Likert-type scale, developed from a 17-item catalog and reduced to 15 items (five per type). Items intended to measure ICL and ECL "were formulated passively", while "the items designed to measure GCL were formulated from a first-person perspective (“I”)" to make the active investment of cognitive resources easier to assess. The strict use of "learning content" (ICL) versus "design or structure of the learning material" (ECL) wording was chosen because learners have problems differentiating ICL from ECL, and one ICL item explicitly addresses prior knowledge.
