Description

A culturally adapted self-report scale measuring operational, formal/navigation, and informational/evaluation Internet skills among Latin American college students.

Components

  • Four-domain model of Internet skills (operational, formal, information, strategic): The article adopts van Deursen and van Dijk's taxonomy of Internet skills, in which "Operational skills consist of the actions that allow a person to use digital tools", "Formal skills refer to navigation and orientation in structures specific to digital media", information skills concern searching, comparing, assessing and integrating information, and strategic skills involve using the Internet to achieve personal, professional, or social goals. The study adapts and validates the self-report scale for the first three domains in a Latin American college sample, excluding the strategic dimension because three items could not be culturally adapted. (Burin et al. (2018))
