Description

A standardized handwriting-legibility rating scale developed by Leonard P. Ayres for comparing pupils' handwriting quality across ages, grades, and schools.

Components

  • The Ayres scale as a workable instrument for measuring and comparing handwriting legibility across ages, grades and schools: The Ayres scale grades handwriting on eight supposed equal steps designated 20 to 90, with three specimen styles (vertical, medium slant and full slant) under each grade; grade 20 is very poor writing and 90 is excellence "seldom attained in the public schools." The article uses it to grade 966 specimens copied "in their ordinary hand," to compare grade with grade, age with age, and school with school, and to test the scale's practicability. It concludes the scale is workable but that subjective judging cannot be fully eliminated. (King et al. (1914))
