Description¶
A live classroom-observation instrument developed by Schenke et al. for rating the quality of early mathematics environments and teaching in preschool classrooms.
Components¶
- COEMET — Classroom Observation of Early Mathematics Environment and Teaching: The COEMET is a live classroom observation instrument used to measure the quality of early mathematics environments. Its first section documents the number of computers and the start and end times of all activities via interval coding; its second section contains 28 indicators rated on a 5-point Likert scale during each mathematics activity, covering constructs such as supporting children's conceptual understanding, teaching strategies, and expectations. In this study, inter-rater reliability was 88% of Likert items coded identically, and coefficient alpha ranged from .95 to .97 in previous research. (Schenke et al. (2017))
Claims¶
- Observed teacher expectations and developmental appropriateness were more strongly associated with mathematics achievement for African American than non-African American preschoolers [+W]
- Baseline correlations: teacher confidence and enthusiasm and expectations dimensions correlated with posttest achievement, but support for mathematical discourse did not [+W]
