Description¶
Assessment instruments developed by Dr. Diana Sharp with University of Washington experts for the A4L curriculum to measure cross-unit DEEP literacy, empathy, perspective-taking, and related life skills among students in grades 3–5.
Components¶
- Comprehensive Cross Unit (CCU) Assessments measuring Cross-Unit DEEP literacy and life skills: The CCU Assessments (Joy, Ruth, and Jackie Tests) were developed specifically for the A4L curriculum by Dr. Diana Sharp with University of Washington experts, and assess Cross-Unit skills rather than Unit-Specific skills. Cross-Unit items assess "DEEP skills (Decision Enhanced by Empathy and Perspective)", including describing a character's or author's traits, emotions, thoughts, or internal motivations and analyzing how perspective impacts genre-specific elements. The tests use open-ended questions scored with rubrics of nine (Joy) or 12 (Ruth, Jackie) criteria, with printed Cronbach's alphas of .70-.75 (Joy), .77-.82 (Ruth), and .80/.79 (Jackie pre/post).
