Description¶
CBAM is an implementation framework developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin for assessing and supporting individuals’ adoption of educational innovations.
Components¶
- Levels of Use of the Innovation: eight developmental levels with decision points: Levels of Use (LoU) is a CBAM diagnostic dimension that "focuses on describing, in operational terms, the behaviors that innovation nonusers and users demonstrate relative to the innovation." Eight levels are operationally defined (0 Nonuse, I Orientation, II Preparation, III Mechanical Use, IVA Routine, IVB Refinement, V Integration, VI Renewal), each separated by a Decision Point, with seven behavior categories (Knowledge, Acquiring Information, Sharing, Assessing, Planning, Status Reporting, Performing) described at each level. (Hall (1978))
- Levels of Use of the Innovation: an eight-level behavioral framework for individual innovation implementation: Levels of Use of the Innovation (LoU) is a generic implementation variable describing the performance of an individual using any innovation, part of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model. Growth in use is viewed as following similar steps regardless of the innovation: "from before any knowledge of the innovation exists, through preparation to begin use, through development of skills and knowledges necessary for use to become routine, and finally through refinement, integration, and renewal". The eight levels are Nonuse, Orientation, Preparation, Mechanical Use, Routine, Refinement, Integration, and Renewal, each with printed behavioral indicators. (Loucks (1977))
Claims¶
- Two independent research efforts identified the same three pre-use phases of the adoption process [~W]
- Lou Dimension Existence Verified [+M]
- Ndn Stages Correspond To Levels Of Use [+M]
- The LoU Interview shows high interrater reliability, and the rating procedure was streamlined over two years without loss of agreement [+W]
- LoU Interview ratings correlated .65 with readers' ratings of written ethnographic protocols, which the author read as support for the interview's validity tempered by second-hand information [+W]
