Description¶
A longitudinal dataset from 81 bilingual Puerto Rican-heritage Head Start children containing repeated English and Spanish language measures and reading outcomes, collected and analyzed by Davison et al.
Components¶
- Longitudinal bilingual language and literacy dataset from 81 Head Start children with growth curve analysis: The study's dataset comprises 81 bilingual Puerto Rican-heritage children from low-income families in Central Pennsylvania, assessed in fall and spring of two Head Start years and at the end of first grade. Language measures included the TELD-3 and PPVT-III for English, the PLS-3 and TVIP for Spanish, and the WLPB-R letter-word identification and passage comprehension subtests for reading. Children were divided into Home English Communicators (n = 48) and School English Communicators (n = 33) based on mothers' reports of English exposure timing. Growth curve models were estimated using R-software 2.5.1 with measurement occasion as the time metric. (Davison et al. (2011))
Claims¶
- Growth in bilingual preschoolers' Spanish receptive vocabulary and oral comprehension during Head Start positively predicts first-grade Spanish letter-word identification and passage comprehension [+W]
- Growth in bilingual preschoolers' English receptive vocabulary and oral comprehension during Head Start positively predicts first-grade English letter-word identification and passage comprehension [+W]
- Bilingual children's English and Spanish receptive vocabulary and oral comprehension both increased across two years of Head Start, with group advantages in the language of prior exposure [+W]
- Growth in English receptive language during Head Start predicts first-grade Spanish letter-word identification and passage comprehension, supporting cross-language transfer [+W]
- Timing of English exposure moderates how vocabulary growth predicts reading: English vocabulary growth predicted HEC children's English passage comprehension while Spanish vocabulary growth predicted SEC children's English reading [+W]
- Growth in Spanish receptive language during Head Start predicts first-grade English letter-word identification and passage comprehension, with timing-of-exposure group differences for Spanish vocabulary [+W]
