Description¶
A supplemental beginning-reading programme developed by Dr. Barbara Taylor that provides whole-class or small-group instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, contextual analysis, repeated reading, and writing for students in kindergarten through grade 4.
Components¶
- Early Intervention in Reading® (EIR®) supplemental beginning-reading program: EIR® is a supplemental program providing extra instruction to groups of students at risk of failing to learn to read. The report states "The program uses picture books to stress instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, and contextual analysis, along with repeated reading and writing." In grades K–2 it is whole-class instruction with additional small-group work for struggling readers; in grades 3–4 it is small-group instruction 20 minutes, four days a week. Instruction involves 15–20 minutes of daily supplemental instruction to the whole class or groups of five to seven struggling readers, developed by Dr. Barbara Taylor and distributed by the EIR® program. (Early Intervention in Reading® (2008))
- EIR® nine-month Internet-based teacher professional development program: EIR® teacher training lasts nine months and combines monthly two-hour Internet sessions with telephone support from an EIR® trainer. The report states "The training program lasts nine months and consists of two-hour Internet sessions conducted once a month, along with telephone support from an EIR® trainer." Each session typically includes 45 minutes in a large group led by an onsite facilitator, 45 minutes in small groups where teachers share videos of their own practices, and a half-hour conference call with an EIR® trainer. Training modules cover program use, research background, grade-level routines, assessments, involving parents, training coaches, running records, and implementation ev (Early Intervention in Reading® (2008))
- Daily supplemental small-group early-reading cycle combining repeated reading, phonemic segmentation, and guided writing: The EIR® instructional pattern organizes supplemental early-reading instruction as short daily sessions (15–20 minutes) for the lowest-achieving students, working in groups of five to seven with the classroom teacher. In the studied first-grade implementation, the program ran in three-day cycles: the teacher read a picture book to the whole class, taught intervention students to segment words and blend phonemes, then had students read a story summary with minimal assistance and write one related sentence a day with the teacher's help. Children additionally worked individually (5 minutes) or in pairs (10 minutes) with a trained aide or project assistant, with weekly running records to assess (Early Intervention in Reading® (2008))
Claims¶
- EIR® showed large alphabetics effect sizes and improvement indices of +29 to +42 percentile points in the one qualifying study [+W]
- EIR® had a positive, substantively important but statistically non-significant effect on first-grade reading comprehension [+W]
- EIR® produced statistically significant positive effects on first-grade alphabetics outcomes (segmentation and blending, vowel sounds) [+M]
- The evidence base for EIR® is small: only one of seven reviewed studies met WWC evidence standards [~W]
