Description¶
From Here to There (FH2T) is a digital game developed as a supplemental learning intervention for middle- and high-school students to practice algebraic expressions and equation solving through direct manipulation of mathematical notation.
Components¶
- From Here to There (FH2T) digital game for algebraic expressions and equation solving: FH2T is a digital game "designed to strengthen students' understanding of algebraic expressions and equation solving." Students "interact directly with algebraic notation by dragging and transforming expressions using mathematically valid operations." The game presents a starting expression and a mathematically equivalent target expression, and students manipulate the original to match the target, practicing distribution, factoring, inverse operations, and order of operations. It is intended for middle and high school students in introductory prealgebra or algebra. (From Here to There (FH2T): Program Description et al. (2023))
- From Here to There (FH2T): a game-based application teaching algebra through discovery-based puzzles with manipulable symbols and immediate feedback: FH2T is Graspable Math's game-based application, "grounded in perceptual learning and cognitive theories," that teaches math through discovery-based puzzles in which students transform an algebraic expression into a mathematically equivalent but perceptually different goal state. Symbols become concrete objects students can drag, combine, and substitute, with fluid visualizations and immediate feedback (invalid moves "shake" and return to the previous state). Problems are organized into worlds that increase in complexity, and a teacher console aggregates measures such as efficiency, resets, attempts, time, and hints. (Tarik Buli et al. (2025))
Claims¶
- Algebra ability level differences appear on both criteria with no treatment-by-ability interaction [~W]
- Educators perceived FH2T as strongly connected to Common Core Standards for Mathematical Content and uniquely integrating the Standards for Mathematical Practice [+W]
- Educators who implemented FH2T through partner or group work perceived it promoted peer collaboration and mathematical discussion [+W]
- Educators perceived FH2T positioned students as doers of mathematics with agency and mathematical decision making in a safe practice environment [+W]
- Educators used FH2T's teacher console insights to modify instruction, and recommended the console share students' mathematical capabilities and content-area difficulties [+W]
