Description¶
Fractions Lab is an exploratory fraction-learning environment developed by the iTalk2Learn project in which learners manipulate graphical representations and receive adaptive task-dependent support.
Components¶
- Fractions Lab exploratory learning environment with adaptive task-dependent support: Fractions Lab is the ELE developed by the iTalk2Learn project, used in both the German and UK studies. "It provides exploratory tasks that aim to help the student develop conceptual knowledge of fractions." Students manipulate graphical fraction representations (number lines, rectangles, sets, liquid measures) to solve tasks such as finding equivalent fractions. Task-Dependent Support varies along two dimensions — six feedback purposes and four feedback levels from Socratic questioning to a didactic-procedural backstop — with delivery mode (low- or high-interruptive) chosen by a Bayesian network predicting affective benefit. (Mavrikis et al. (2022))
Claims¶
- The effect of practice schedules depends on the type of target knowledge, with increasingly interleaved practice most effective for area models. [~W]
- Interleaving multiple graphical representations of fractions gave a qualified advantage over blocked practice, mainly on delayed conceptual transfer and for low-prior-knowledge students [+W]
