Description¶
FrameTrail is an enhanced video-based learning environment developed and used by Ruf et al. to support video viewing, annotation, hyperlinking, and learner-generated information structuring.
Components¶
- FrameTrail enhanced video-based learning environment with annotation and hyperlink tools: FrameTrail is the enhanced video-based environment used in the experiment, in which a 3:56-minute instructional video on synaptic plasticity was embedded together with "topic-related in-depth information in form of prepared text snippets directly available below the video". Annotation-condition participants read the snippets and wrote self-written summaries into the video; hyperlink-condition participants dragged the predefined snippets into the video at appropriate places; display time of both could be manually changed. The environment also provided log-file protocols of micro- and macro-actions used as process measures. (Ruf et al. (2023))
Claims¶
- Learners using hyperlinks produce hypervideo products of higher quality than learners using annotations [+M]
- Tool type shapes learning activity: annotation users perform more macro-actions, hyperlink users more micro-actions [+M]
