Description

An expert-consensus framework developed by the GROW project that guides primary mathematics teachers through diagnosing needs, setting differentiated goals, differentiating instruction and practice, and evaluating progress.

Components

  • The cycle of differentiation: a five-step expert-consensus model for differentiating primary mathematics instruction: The cycle of differentiation is the GROW project's expert-consensus model of what teachers should do to implement differentiation in daily mathematics practice. It comprises five steps: identification of educational needs (including diagnostic interviews and analysis of daily work), setting differentiated goals that are challenging but realistic, differentiated instruction (broad whole-class instruction, tailored subgroup instruction, individual adaptations), differentiated practice (quantitatively and qualitatively, including compacting and enriching material for high achievers), and evaluation of progress and process, which feeds back into needs identification. Students work in flexible within-class achievement groups part of the time and can switch groups as needs change. (Prast et al. (2018))
