Description

A mobile-based 17-item self-report instrument introduced by Pöysä et al. for measuring lower-secondary students’ situation-specific engagement, disaffection, competence experiences, and help-seeking at the end of lessons.

Components

  • InSitu mobile-based instrument for lesson-to-lesson ratings of situation-specific engagement: The InSitu (InSituations) instrument is a mobile application pre-programmed into smart phones with which students rate their situation-specific engagement at the end of lessons; "InSitu consists of 17 items (Table 1) rated on a 5-point scale (1 = not at all; 5 = very much)." Confirmatory factor analysis established a five-factor structure (behavioral/cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, disaffection, competence experiences, help-seeking) with acceptable fit (CFI = .932; RMSEA = .058; SRMR = .051). The present study used the first three latent factors. (Pöysä et al. (2018))
  • InSitu and InSituT mobile-based lesson-specific emotion instruments: The InSituations (InSitu) student instrument and its teacher version (InSituT) are mobile-based questionnaires administered towards the end of each lesson to capture lesson-specific emotions in real time. The student version contributed three emotional-engagement items (positive emotions) and two disaffection items (negative emotions) on a 5-point Likert scale; the teacher version contributed three items each. The article states the instruments "allowed us to collect multi-informant 'real--time' data and observe both change and spill-over of emotions" and reports good reliability and validity among Finnish adolescents and teachers. (Sorkkila et al. (2026))
