Description¶
An intensive early behavioral intervention programme developed at UCLA and delivered through the Lovaas Institute, combining one-to-one discrete-trial instruction, peer play, classroom inclusion, generalization activities, and parent training.
Components¶
- Lovaas Model of Applied Behavior Analysis: intensive early behavioral intervention program: The Lovaas Model is "a type of behavioral therapy that initially focuses on discrete trials: brief periods of one-on-one instruction, during which a teacher cues a behavior, prompts the appropriate response, and provides reinforcement to the child." Children receive an average of 35 to 40 hours of intervention per week combining in-home one-to-one instruction, facilitated peer play, classroom inclusion, and generalization activities; parents are trained in instructional techniques and the intervention generally lasts about three years. It was developed at UCLA under O. Ivar Lovaas and is delivered through the Lovaas Institute. (Lovaas Model of Applied Behavior Analysis (2010))
- Staged progression from discrete trial training to naturalistic instruction and generalization: The Lovaas Model organizes instruction as a staged progression. "During the first stages of the intervention, the main method of teaching is discrete trial training", and "As children progress, therapists gradually increase the emphasis on instruction in less structured or more natural settings, such as peer play and classrooms." Early stages target reducing behaviors that interfere with learning and teaching prerequisite skills such as requesting, imitation, and following instructions; instruction then advances to expressive and receptive language, then social and conversation skills, and finally pre-academic and observational learning skills, with programming for generalization to preschoo (Lovaas Model of Applied Behavior Analysis (2010))
Claims¶

- The Lovaas Model has no discernible effects on functional abilities for children with disabilities [-W]
- The Lovaas Model has no discernible effects on social-emotional development and behavior for children with disabilities [-W]
- The Lovaas Model has potentially positive effects on cognitive development for children with disabilities, with an improvement index of +27 percentile points [+M]
