Description¶
An educational programme developed by Maria Montessori that uses mixed-age groupings, prepared environments, specialized materials, and trained teachers to support self-directed learning from birth through adolescence.
Components¶
- The Montessori education system (birth to 18): Montessori is a system of education for children from birth to 18, developed by an Italian physician through observations between 1890 and 1952. It involves "3-year age groupings (0 –3, 3 –6, and so on)" with carefully developed apparatus for each age group, an interconnected network of materials across all curriculum areas, and a teacher whose role is not to impart information but to connect children to an environment where self-guided learning occurs. Its central premise is that children are active learners with intrinsic motivation who develop themselves when adults do not interfere and they can concentrate on meaningful work. (Angeline S. Lillard (2019))
Claims¶
- Children admitted by random lottery to high-fidelity Montessori schools performed better or the same as waitlisted controls on academic, executive function, and social measures, never worse [+M]
- Implementation fidelity matters: classrooms using only Montessori materials produced greater gains than classrooms mixing in other materials [+M]
