MORE is a problem-solving intelligent tutoring system that monitors learner behaviour and adapts its tutoring tactics using simplified effort, confidence, and independence estimates.

  • MORE's characterisation of motivation as effort, confidence and independence monitored on thresholded linear scales: MORE characterised motivation indirectly via three associated factors: "effort, confidence and independence". Each was conceived as a linear scale, seeded halfway, incremented or decremented by learner and system activities, with a threshold below which the system switched on tactics to raise the value — "the model was essentially a motivational thermostat". Confidence here meant confidence in tackling the next task, not stable self-efficacy, and the three scales interacted, e.g. providing help could raise effort but lower independence. (du Boulay et al.
