Description¶
The Multi-strategy test (MST) is an open-response, scenario-based assessment instrument developed by Schuster et al. to measure students' intended application of metacognitive skills and cognitive strategies.
Components¶
- Multi-strategy test (MST) vignette instrument for intended strategy application: The MST is a scenario-based test presenting "a fictitious learning situation in which students are asked to describe their intended approach to process the given learning task" in an open-response format. Two versions (MST_E for an experimentation task, MST_T for a text-highlighting task) are coded with a category system awarding up to 9 points for metacognitive skills and 9 for cognitive strategy steps. Double-coding a subsample of N = 60 (about 25% of the sample) yielded good inter-rater reliability with an average Cohen's of .91. (Schuster et al. (2020))
- Multi-Strategy Test (MST) scenario-based vignette measure with a new seven-category quality-focused coding manual: The Multi-Strategy Test (MST; Stebner et al., 2015) presents fictitious learning scenarios in which students describe their intended approach in open-response format, coded for metacognitive skills. The new coding manual covers "Goal setting, planning, monitoring (observing), monitoring (assessing), reacting, reflecting, and evaluating," awarding zero to two points per category (maximum 14). Three versions were used: MST_E (experimenting), MST_T (text highlighting), and MST_P (preparing for a class exam), serving as near- or far-transfer tasks depending on group. (Stebner et al. (2022))
