Description

A California Department of Education Safe and Supportive Schools indicator that aggregates student self-report data to measure school climate across supports, engagement, safety, violence, victimization, substance use, and truancy.

Components

  • School Climate Index framework of five recurring climate dimensions: The report organizes school climate, a term with "no consensus definition," around five recurring themes identified in prior reviews: order, safety, and discipline; academic supports; personal and social relationships; school facilities; and school connectedness. Operationally it uses the California Healthy Kids Survey to build a School Climate Index combining two domains — supports and engagement, and low violence, victimization, and substance use — plus a truancy indicator, rescaled to a mean of 300 and SD of 50. (Voight et al. (2013))
