Description¶
Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) is a multi-tiered adolescent-literacy curriculum and instructional programme created and disseminated by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning, including its Learning Strategies Curriculum variants Xtreme Reading and Fusion Reading.
Components¶
- Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) and its Learning Strategies Curriculum (Xtreme Reading, Fusion Reading): SIM is "a multi-tiered approach to adolescent literacy" created by the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. It emphasizes teaching routines that let teachers organize and present content clearly and give students tools to solve problems independently. All SIM approaches teach decoding, comprehension, and other reading objectives with step-by-step strategies such as word identification, visual imagery, self-questioning, paraphrasing, vocabulary learning, and writing, with mnemonics to help students remember the steps. Targeted versions provide an additional daily reading period through the Learning Strategies Curriculum, disseminated as Xtreme Reading and Fusion Reading. (Strategic Instruction Model (SIM) (2024))
- Four SIM learning strategies taught in the trial: Bridging, Building Fluency, Prediction, and Summarization: The study taught four SIM learning strategies using the existing SIM strategy template: "The Bridging Strategy, The Building Fluency Strategy, The Prediction Strategy, and The Summarization Strategy." Bridging is a word-level decoding strategy using the mnemonic PART with a FIND subroutine for syllabication; Fluency uses two cycles of repeated reading, first word-level then passage-level, re-reading lists 3 to 7 times to mastery; Prediction uses the CLUE mnemonic (check for clues, link to prior knowledge, unveil predictions, examine the reading); Summarization uses the READ mnemonic (review, evaluate, answer with paraphrase, determine a summary). Each strategy presents short sequenced steps with a mnemonic to cue cognitive and metacognitive actions. (Hock Michael F. (2011))
Claims¶
- Strategic instruction in four learning strategies produced no significantly different reading comprehension gains than typical adult education instruction [~M]
- Learning strategies instruction produced no significantly different gains in word reading subskills or oral reading fluency measures than typical adult education instruction [~M]
