Description¶
A paper-and-pencil diagnostic assessment battery developed by Minnick for high-school geometry pupils to identify weaknesses in the abilities underlying geometric proof.
Components¶
- Tests A, B, C, and D: four diagnostic tests for the fundamental geometry abilities: An element consisting of four paper-and-pencil diagnostic tests, each arranged to measure only one of the four abilities. Test A asked pupils to draw the figure for stated exercises; in Test B the figure was drawn and the pupil stated hypothesis and conclusion; in Test C a drawn figure with given facts was supplemented by as many more facts as the pupil could add; in Test D the figure, started hypothesis and conclusion, and a list of facts were given, and the pupil was asked to give the proof. Each test was given to not less than one thousand pupils in sixty-three schools. (Minnick (1925))
Claims¶
- Teachers' geometry marks usually bear a positive relation to the four fundamental abilities [+W]
- Extremely low school scores suggest progress in geometry is nearly impossible until the fundamental abilities are developed [+W]
- Teachers' marks often correlate so weakly with the four abilities that heavy instructional time on them may be hard to justify in some schools [-W]
