Description¶
Valor Collegiate Academy's whole-school SEL and mental-health programme uses five interdependent domains, developmental badges, and weekly mentor-facilitated Compass Circles for students in Grades 5–12.
Components¶
- Valor Collegiate Academy Compass Model with badge system and Compass Circles: The Compass Model is Valor Collegiate Academy's whole-school SEL and mental health approach, consisting of five interdependent domains that help students develop an inner compass for a purposeful life. Students earn badges marking key disciplines, habits, and mindsets from 5th grade to graduation, and participate in weekly Compass Circles of 15 to 20 students facilitated by a mentor. Survey data showed "more than 80% of students report that Circles help them feel less alone," and approximately 80% of faculty reported the program changed how they think about emotions; 64 schools have adopted the model.
