Description¶
Wayang Outpost is an intelligent tutoring system for middle- and high-school mathematics developed to provide adaptive practice, tutoring, and motivational support.
Components¶
- Effort-based tutoring (EBT): adaptive problem selection and pedagogical moves inferred from correctness, help requests and time: EBT is Wayang Outpost's pedagogical decision-making model. It "adapts problem selection depending on the effort exerted by a student on a practice activity based on three different dimensions of student behavior: attempts to solve a problem, help requested, and time to answer". It defines a region of expected behavior per problem from historical log data, infers a most-likely student state (e.g., mastery without effort, hint abuse, low effort), and selects pedagogical and affective/motivational moves accordingly (Table 1). The authors contrast it with BKT and IRT, claiming it models cognitive, affective and metacognitive states together and captures inherent item difficulty beyond the required procedure. (Arroyo et al. (2014))
