Description

YAI4Edu is an open-source software pipeline developed by Francesco Sovrano and colleagues that transforms PDF, XML, or HTML educational texts into interactive textbooks with clickable glosses, overviews, and open-ended question answering.

Components

  • Intelligent Explanation Generator: an algorithm selecting questions best answered by the whole text collection: The Intelligent Explanation Generator is the component of YAI4Edu responsible for selecting pedagogically useful implicit questions. It computes the Degree of Explainability (DoX) of text snippets about an explanandum, takes the top k snippets, extracts archetypal questions from them with a fine-tuned T5 model, and filters pertinent answers through sub-steps that remove over-long questions, correct grammar via Gramformer, drop overly similar questions, and keep the top q questions sorted by answer pertinence. It operationalizes Hypothesis 1: the most useful implicit questions are those best answered by the collection as a whole, neither too detailed nor too general. (Sovrano Francesco et al. (2024))
