Description¶
The article introduces "a novel simulation methodology" that models teacher workforce dynamics to attribute teacher quality gaps to their underlying processes. It models "three interrelated processes—teacher attrition from the state teaching workforce, teacher mobility between teaching positions, and teacher hiring for open positions" and their joint contribution to TQGs in K-12 public schools. The methodology is applied empirically to Washington State administrative data to generate counterfactual gap-closing estimates.
Accounts¶
- Agent-based simulation methodology for decomposing teacher quality gap sources: The article introduces "a novel simulation methodology" that models teacher workforce dynamics to attribute teacher quality gaps to their underlying processes. (Dan Goldhaber et al. (2023))
Claims¶
- Eliminating attrition inequities alone does little to close teacher quality gaps [+W]
- Eliminating hiring inequities alone would close teacher quality gaps within 10 years [+W]
- Eliminating inequities in both teacher mobility and hiring would close teacher quality gaps within 5 years in simulations [+W]
- Teacher attrition, mobility, and hiring jointly contribute to teacher quality gaps between students of color and other students [+W]
