Description¶
The article organizes SNA-based CSCL measurement around two dimensions. The participatory dimension is captured by degree centralities: outdegree is "frequently calculated as the number of out-posts generated by a learner" and indicates quantity of participation, while indegree counts replies received and indicates prestige or worthiness of contribution. The social dimension is captured by closeness, betweenness and eigenvector centralities; the article states that "Eigenvector centrality captures the social positioning of the students more reliably than the other centrality measures" because it weighs the centrality of a learner's contacts. The study validates which configurations best measure each dimension.
Accounts¶
- Centrality measures as operationalization of the participatory and social dimensions of CSCL: The article organizes SNA-based CSCL measurement around two dimensions. The participatory dimension is captured by degree centralities: outdegree is "frequently calculated as the number of out-posts generated by a learner" and indicates quantity of participation, while indegree counts replies received and indicates prestige or worthiness of contribution. Claims¶
- Multigraph indegree centrality is consistently and positively correlated with student performance across 12 PBL courses, with stronger correlations than other configurations in eight courses [+M]
- Multigraph outdegree centrality is the most robust participation indicator, with significant positive correlations in all courses, while weighted outdegree was negatively correlated in two courses [+M]
- Betweenness centrality shows the least consistent correlation with performance, being largely insignificant or negative across configurations except in one course [~M]
