Description

A novel observational coding scheme designed by the authors, based on the PAT theory and inspirations from Chiu (2008), applied utterance-by-utterance to videotaped and transcribed AUT sessions. It contains two broad categories, cognitive perspective taking (Listen/understand and Extend/revise) and social-emotional perspective taking (Direct deny/doubt, Polite deny/doubt, Recognize/agree, Appreciate/praise), plus Inviting behavior and Utterance number as controls. Reliability testing showed that "Kappa was 0.63 (95 % CI [0.59,0.66]) for the whole coding scheme (with mutual-exclusive categories)".
