Description

The article argues that large-scale analysis of written student feedback is easily dismissed as too time-consuming when done purely by hand, and that purely automatic methods lose richness. Combining the two addresses both problems: "Topic modelling allows pre-sorting large document sets into topic categories and finding most characteristic documents from each category", while thematic analysis assigns expert human themes to those categories. This makes thematic analysis practical in larger datasets and speeds up the analysis.

Accounts

  • Combine topic modelling with thematic analysis to make qualitative analysis of large feedback datasets practical: The article argues that large-scale analysis of written student feedback is easily dismissed as too time-consuming when done purely by hand, and that purely automatic methods lose richness.
