Description

Effort analysis is a method for conducting "effort-related individual score validation" of achievement test data. It operates at the level of the individual test event, seeking to identify scores that have been "materially distorted by non-effortful test taking" so that inferences about what a student knows and can do are not based on scores distorted by construct-irrelevant factors such as low test-taking motivation. The article presents the method as a complement to standard measurement models, which assume effortful responding.

Accounts

  • Effort analysis: a method for effort-related individual score validation of achievement test data: Effort analysis is a method for conducting "effort-related individual score validation" of achievement test data. (Steven Wise (2015))
  • Researchers must deliberately choose between invested mental effort and perceived task difficulty items and state at which point and how frequently cognitive load is measured: Because the two dominant single-item cognitive load ratings capture different aspects of overall load, the article advises that "researchers should therefore discuss carefully which item they use and how this may limit the results of their study". It further advises "to precisely examine at which point and how frequently cognitive load is measured as delayed ratings are closely related to more demanding items within a set of items". The principle applies whenever single-item subjective ratings are used as an indicator of overall cognitive load. (Schuessler et al. (2025))
  • Taxonomy of effort constructs distinguishing task-imposed from voluntarily allocated effort: The commentary organizes the proliferating effort terminology along one axis: whether effort is imposed by the task or voluntarily allocated by the learner. Mental load, data-driven effort, and effort-by-complexity can be modelled purely cognitively, whereas mental effort, goal-driven effort, effort-by-allocation, and effort-by-need frustration — defined as "how strenuous or aversive a person experiences task execution" — all carry a motivational component. The article uses this taxonomy to diagnose where CLT and SRL accounts diverge. (Katharina Scheiter (2025))
