Description¶
The review organises preschool SR/EF interventions into a taxonomy building on Takacs and Kassai (2019), in which "four higher-order categories comprised of 12 distinct intervention approaches were identified": Play (mediated structured play, semi-structured creative play), Social-Emotional (mindfulness, SEL programs), Curricula and Pedagogy (curricula, multicomponent training, music, mathematics, language training, integrated arts), and Non-routine Activities (task training including digitalised, physical activity). The taxonomy allows results to be synthesised separately for each approach and then reconciled across approaches to identify which content and features yield comparatively more robust child-level effects.
Accounts¶
- Four-category taxonomy of 12 preschool SR/EF intervention approaches: The review organises preschool SR/EF interventions into a taxonomy building on Takacs and Kassai (2019), in which "four higher-order categories comprised of 12 distinct intervention approaches were identified": Play (mediated structured play, semi-structured creative play), Social-Emotional (mindfulness, SEL programs), Curricula and Pedagogy (curricula, multicomponent training, music, mathematics, language training, integrated arts), and Non-routine Activities (task training including digitalised, physical activity). The taxonomy allows results to be synthesised separately for each approach and then reconciled across approaches to identify which content and features yield comparatively more robust child-level effects. (Rosalyn A. Muir · Steven J. Howard · Lisa Kervin (2023))
Claims¶
- Mediated structured play yields relatively robust evidence of efficacy, varying by interventionist, target and measured outcome [+W]
- Music interventions show moderately strong evidence for EF change including inhibitory control, possibly stronger with greater intensity and longevity [+W]
- Mindfulness interventions show comparatively robust efficacy for preschool SR/EF, especially for outcomes requiring integrated mobilisation of EFs and SR [+W]
- Cognitively engaging physical activity shows amongst the strongest support of the profiled approaches for preschool SR/EF [+W]
