Description¶
The article organizes evaluation around four requirements an education-facing model should jointly satisfy, drawn from the learning-sciences literature (Shulman's pedagogical content knowledge, Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, Bloom's tutoring ideal, and AI-in-education ethics frameworks). As the article prints them: "These are general capability, the subject mastery that teaching presupposes; safety and trustworthiness, robust and age-appropriate behavior under sensitive and adversarial prompts; basic teaching ability, the production of usable instructional behavior; and high-level educational cultivation, the pedagogical judgment a domain expert exercises." ELBench operationalizes these as its four modules, and the evaluation shows the requirements are related but not interchangeable, since safety and teaching behave as competing objectives.
Accounts¶
- Four-requirement framework for education-facing LLMs: general capability, safety and trustworthiness, basic teaching ability, and high-level educational cultivation: The article organizes evaluation around four requirements an education-facing model should jointly satisfy, drawn from the learning-sciences literature (Shulman's pedagogical content knowledge, Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, Bloom's tutoring ideal, and AI-in-education ethics frameworks). (Yilin Jiang et al. (2026))
Claims¶
- Safety and Trustworthiness is strongly anti-correlated with Basic Education across the nine evaluated models (r = −0.83) [+M]
- The two education-specialized models lead neither education module, and the improvement from education-specific post-training is small relative to differences in general capability [+M]
- Current LLMs misalign instructional-strategy sensitivity with pedagogical relevance, including hallucinated relevance of irrelevant traits [-W]
