Description

The article develops a coding scheme assessing self-explanation quality as the degree to which written problem solutions include correctly applied and justified conceptual information. For each of three problems, three claims (variables and design, statistical analysis, statistical assumptions) were coded as no claim (0), incomplete (0.5), or complete (1), and separately coded for justification (visually, spatially, or verbally linked). Scores were summed to a 0–27 self-explanation quality measure (Cronbach's α = .78), with concept application coded separately to capture the inferences learners made.
